Visit to Preciosa Crystal Factory, 3 APRIL 2009 - by Eliza Dato' Zainudin
PERWAKILAN Prague organized a visit to Preciosa factory in Kamenicky Senov, Czech Republic, about 110 km from Prague on 3 April 2009. It was the first activity of PERWAKILAN Prague after its formation on 26 March 2009. The decision to visit the factory was made since crystal is very much synonym to Prague. PERWAKILAN Delegation was led by its Chairman, Puan Sakhiah Mohd Soom.
Upon arrival, the Delegation was received by Mr Josef Polma, Personnel Security Officer of Preciosa, who also guided them throughout the one and a half hour tour. The factory building was built in 1972 by Mr Polma's father, the founder of Preciosa before it was taken over by the Communists. This factory produces chandeliers of various designs made of brass and glass.
The Delegation was able to witness the way chandeliers were patiently made by highly skilled workers. Firstly, the sand glass must be turned into liquid by shovelling sandglass into a furnace that reaches a temperature of up to 1500 degrees Celsius. The temperature is very high because that is the condition needed to melt the sandglass. From 1:45pm, the workers finish working and will continue the following day at 5:15am to collect the liquid from the furnace and turn the liquid into what would become the crystal parts of chandeliers. These crystal parts are then put into a fridge which cools and solidifies the crystals. Finally, they are taken out of the fridge, and are carefully carved into various designs. The workers must start the process from the beginning; turning the sandglass into liquid. It is worthy to note that the selected sand glass is about 20% recycled glass and as for the metal part (brass), it is made of a mixture of 70% copper and 30% zinc.
Before their departure, the Delegation had lunch at a very unique restaurant, called Ajeto Restaurant in Novy Bor. The restaurant is owned by a glass maker, whereby all his customers are be able to enjoy eating a variety of delicious Czech dishes while watching his workers blow glass and plates that will be used in his restaurant.
Indeed, the visit to Preciosa has been a fruitful and enriching one for members of PERWAKILAN with the knowledge on how glass products were made, especially chandeliers. (please see Photo Gallery)
